Tips On Songwriting

by HY Chong

Depends on individual, there are many different ways that a songwriter may be adopted in writing songs. Now, I would like to share with you some of the common technics that you may consider when you are out of ideas. Enjoy your writing.

It Got To Be Love Song! Why? It has become the entry point for most song writers as everyone experience love. Love can either from family, friends or partner. Love song is all time greatest hits. No point re-inventing the wheel. Let ideas flow out of your heart. You should not be afraid to write lyrics that say what you feel. Love songs work!

Stop Thinking About Money. You should be writing song for passion instead of for making money as your primary focus. If you're doing this just because you thing there is money to be made, when that doesn't come you will become frustrated and give up. Focus on writing good songs and the money will follow.

Listen To Music More Often. Listen to hits. Ask yourself this question. What has made these songs hits? What tricks and techniques has the songwriter used? My friend, why create mediocrity if you can copy genius? Some people tend to think differently.

You Should Be Writing Everyday. Writing more regularly will certainly pay off. Your songwriting skills will surely improve if you should write at least a few lines a day, the more the merrier.

Write Songs About Your Own Experiences. It's much easier to write about what you have experienced than what you've been through. It comes from within. You should however think of your target market of your song.

Fine Tune Your Songs. You should "touch up" and rewrite your song until you feel satisfactory. Even a small glitch may ruin the whole song. So keep refining these lyrics or melodies which you think need enhancing. Make sure that your song is polished to perfection, at least you think it is.

Know Your Target Audience. Once you know them, you will know what is their song appetite and hence write something that they can digest and understand. No point to write a song that they don't understand your message. Write in a language that your audience and target market understands and appreciates. Use simple words in your lyrics.

Read Read Read. Read more on the subject of song writing. Read the good ones. This will help you a lot. There are many good songs writing books out there that will give you all the song writing tips you're searching for. Visiting library is a good idea.

Make Sure You Have A Recording Device Standby All The Time. Keep a recorder device close to you even though you are at your bed. You may suddenly wake up with a brilliant idea which who knows will make you million dollars. I was once recorded my idea by calling my own number when I mobile phone battery was flatten. However, I have also lost some of my precious ideas when I lost my mobile phone, which I used it for recording purpose most of the time. So remember to back up your songs regularly be it complete or incomplete because once you have loose, it may be a permanently lost.

Learn From Others. This guy can't play...!? One mistake many songwriters/musicians make is to criticize each other behind their backs. Instead of focusing on people's weaknesses, you should learn from their strengths. In order words, make their strengths yours. I'm a firm believer that every musician has something to offer, no matter how small.

You Should Carry A Notebook/Writing Pad. Similarly, you should carry a notebook. Jot down these ideas. They come unexpectedly. Some of the greatest hits that were ever written started with one simple, stupid idea. Don't miss out.

The Impressive Beginning Make a good first impression with the first line of your song. Grab your listener's attention immediately. If your first line is below average, it may be difficult to have your audience hear that great lines which you have in subsequent verses. You're your feel like they eager to listen to your full song.

Learn From Different Song Writers. We tend to focus on people's weaknesses and forget about their strengths. We should learn their strengths. I'm believe everybody has something to offer, be it big or small. Do not stick to the same songwriting style for too long. Your audience will feel bore after a while.

Retain Your Audience. Each song will have a part or a verse that grabs the audience attention. This is where your audience get hook. Once they are hooked, they can be sub-consciously singing your song all day long, to the point where ... they just can't get it out of their heads! It is the sweet part of the song that's repeated over and over. Don't waste the listener's time with extra-long verses. Get to the hook.

Make Writing Fun. Writing song should be fun. I feel sad that sometimes musicians and songwriters are pressured to write a song, especially those who are writing for commercial purposes. They don't enjoy what they do. When you first started in song writing? I'm sure you did it for the fun part of it. Only when writing is fun, the creativity flows. Enjoy writing song please!

Supercharging Your Inspiration For Songwriting - It's Easy!

Supercharging Your Inspiration For Songwriting - It's Easy!
by Shamir Rele

I'm sure there have been times where you feel like you just can't write ANYTHING. It's like, the more you force it out the less you seem to create. And then when you DO finally write something -- ANYTHING (a chord, a lyric, a melody or even just a scratch of an idea) you automatically reject that because you think it's a crappy one.

I've had those days ...in fact I still do.

I call it 'lack of inspiration'.

But, I do a few things on a weekly basis which totally rejuvenates my creative thinking. And these things are only a few incredibly simple (and often fun) tasks which to be honest, everybody does on a weekly (or DAILY) basis. But, they totally work.

Here I'll list three of my TOP ways on how I get inspired to write songs again and again.

These may be simple, but doing them will surely re-charge your creativity again and again.

Go To the MOVIES Once a Week

The drudgery ways of everyday life can take it's toll almost on a monthly basis. This is why I like to get away for a a few hours every week to a place where it's almost out of touch with the daily reality I go through.

I'm of course talking about the movie theater ...or the Cinema. And it doesn't matter what movie it is ... that's irrelevant.

Going to see a movie is incredibly inspiring. It's not just the movie itself, it's the atmosphere. It's the experience. Grabbing a pack of nachos and a bag of popcorn along with a soft drink, the posters all around you promoting the next 'big movie', and then of course there's the movie itself -- which quite often takes me into ANOTHER WORLD.

And this is my point exactly. GOING to the movies IS like going to another world. It's a place that's almost out of touch with reality because of all the stuff I mentioned above. Remember, everyday life is the 'norm'. There's nothing made-up or surreal. It can get extremely boring and mundane.

But the movies is different. Without you even knowing, you're getting inspiration pushed in your brain ...just like a beautiful sun setting into the night without notice. You don't realize it until the day (or two) after, but the inspiration is there just waiting to be used.

Getting away into a DIFFERENT world means that you're totally unplugged from the REAL world. Remember, when you're creating, you're using up bags of energy ...this generally means that you are GIVING OUT to create. Going into a SURREAL world means that you are just taking things IN. It's like subconsciously re-charging your internal batteries.

Talk To Somebody NEW Once a Week

This isn't as easy as it sounds for most people (unless it's in your line of work to meet new people every week) but this is where you gain the MOST 'real' insight from 'real people'.

You can meet new people everywhere. For me, there's always somebody new at the gym, library, bar/club or music gig.

This is almost like the opposite of going to the movies. It's the hardcore reality that people share with you that you're after. But it's not so much 'what they say' but more 'how they say it'.

As you have probably noticed, in general people love to tell anecdotes and talk about themselves. As somebody who writes songs, you can use these mannerisms to your advantage. Put yourself in someone else's shoes when they're talking to you. Take mental notes of any repetitive statements they might make.

What do you remember most about the person? What stands out? What impression are you left with? Make a mental note of these things. You can then either fictionalize, exaggerate or minimize this information to write your own lyrics. It's powerful stuff.

Listen to AT LEAST ONE New Artist/Band Every Week

Now what I mean by that is, listen to ONE song from ONE new artist or band each week.

The idea is to hear something fresh and to stay on top of the songwriting scene.

I love artists/bands like Sting, Elton John, Beatles, Prince, Coldplay, Nirvana, and many, many others ...( I love ALL sorts of music) BUT, my point here is that these people are not releasing records every week.

So as much as we'd love to hear music that we already like, we must embrace the music scene on a weekly basis -- otherwise we'll easily become out of touch with how certain things are shifting and shaping up.

So when we listen to new material from a brand new artist, we want to listen out for how THEY are creating their songs. Listen to the way they structure their words, their melodies and their chords. Listen to how their songs are produced and arranged. What's different? What's new? Do you hear something you'd like to incorporate in your own songwriting?

If so, then grab these idea's with both ears and start including them into your songwriting arsenal. The idea here is NOT to copy what they're doing ...but rather integrate the idea's you find interesting into your own creativity :-)

You Were Born To Create by Robin Skeen - from - song writing 4 u

You Were Born To Create by Robin Skeen - from - song writing 4 u

You may not think you have the talent to be creative, but everyone was born with the ability. You can be as creative as the next person. A little time and a little practice is all it takes. Everyone born into this world has the ability to create and potential to be great. Being creative is the same as when you first learned to walk. You had to practice to finally be good at it. Unless you have since lost the ability to walk, you hardly ever think about walking. You just do it. It has become a part of you and being creative can be the same.

You Were Born To Create by Robin Skeen - from - song writing 4 u

The worst thing to do is listen to what anyone else has to say about you. March to the tune in your own heart. Listening to others only messes up the song. It is a waste of time to try to make other people understand your creative process. They simply cannot understand and any help they offer is likely to be less than positive. The most important part of learning to develop your creativity is to invest the time. That does not mean you quit your job and move to a cave. You still have to be in this world with a roof over your head and something to eat. So, maybe you have a job that takes up a lot of your time. This is where a good plan for managing your time comes in.

You Were Born To Create by Robin Skeen - from - song writing 4 u

Another way to get your creativity flowing is to exercise. Yes, the "E" word. This will help clear your mind so that you can relax and listen to your creative side. You will sleep better and in the long run, a side benefit will be that you are in better shape.
Do you remember your dreams? Are the dreams you remember about the wackiest things you have ever heard? That is your mind being creative while you sleep. Try keeping a notepad by your bed and start writing down your dreams. A spark of creativity might just surprise you.
It is not necessary to have the latest toy or gadget in order to create. If you want to write, a simple ballpoint pen will work just fine. You really do not need a word processing program. If you take crappy pictures no matter how much you spend on a camera, then what is the point? Find what works for you without listening to all the hype to buy the latest thing.
Of course none of this is going to work without you having a passion for what you're doing. Passion is wanting something so much that nothing can stop you. This fire will keep you going when nothing else will. Inspiration will come to you at unexpected moments. It isn't something you can make happen. Be prepared for it when it does happen. Keep a notepad with you to jot down ideas when they hit you. You never know when it might come in handy later.
Just keep in mind that this is for you, not for impressing anyone else. Just go with your passion and pretty soon, everyone will notice.
